Digestion starts in the mouth. The mouth is the first part of your digestive tract. Chewing releases digestive enzymes in your saliva that help digest your food.

Chewing also breaks down the food so that it can be better absorbed in your intestines. If you do not chew your food completely, the nutrients in your food might exit the other end of your body without being absorbed. You are not what you eat, but rather you are what you absorb.
If you habitually gobble your food, try putting down the fork or spoon between each bite and not picking it up again until the mouth is empty.
