Carbohydrates (or carbs) are sugars, starches and fiber. Carbs provide your body with energy, if the right kind of carbs are taken. To break it down we can say there are two types of carbs, simple or complex.
Let’s start with the bad carbs or simple carbs and try to understand what they are. First thing they are is easily and quickly absorbed into the blood stream and used for energy. They are usually found in forms of sugar such as candies, syrups, pops and so on. Although quickly absorbed and helpful with energy

boosts, I hope we can agree that this is not the kind of carb we want to feed on. However, there are simple carbs that are better for you, and they can be found in fruits, milk and milk products (be careful of the milk you drink) for example. These carbs need to be taken in light moderation as well, especially if you are trying to tone your body.
Complex carbs take longer to absorb into the bloodstream and longer to be digested. We find complex carbs in whole grain breads, pasta, brown rice, vegetables, and legumes. Unrefined foods are giving you more nutrients and more fiber. Unrefined foods are also keeping you full for a longer time and your energy level will last longer as well.
Both simple and complex carbs are turned into glucose within the body and are used for energy.
It is recommended that 40%-60% of our daily calorie intake should come from carbs. Beware that over consumption of carbs can increase the total calorie intake which can lead to obesity. On the opposite end, not enough carbs can lead to fatigue, muscle cramping, and even poor mental function.
After this quick overview of carbs it is now easier to understand that the right type of carbs and the right amount of carbs can help you look and feel your best.
