This is my story:
Since I stepped off the Ms Fitness World stage last year, I had a goal. No, I had two goals:
To win Ms Fitness World for the 3rd consecutive year, and to become an Oxygen Cover Girl!
I work out year round, but starting with May 2009, I focused primarily on the Ms Fitness World competition. Visualization, planning, and commitment to my program were the keys to success. This year I was "hungry" for my third win. I decided to do whatever was necessary to make it happen. With the help of my dear friend Shawn, we did what was necessary, even the opportunity for travel and a few beautiful vacations to refresh my mind - were all part of the journey to the Ms Fitness World Title.
"THE THEME"
For this year I decided to have a "Bollywood" theme for my fitness routine. Although I love choreographing routines, I was unfamiliar with the authentic and intricate Indian style of dance. After watching one of my favorite TV shows "So You Think You Can
Dance," I noticed Nakul, a choreographer who specializes in Bollywood dance. I took a deep breath and sent him an email asking if he would take me as his client and teach me about Bollywood dance.
When Nakul replied I was incredibly excited and shared this news with my friend Shawn. He was also happy for me and replied, “Let’s make it happen!” He asked me if I thought that this would help me in the competition. The answer was easy -YES! So, the decision was made, calls went out, and soon we were on a plane to
It was such a pleasure to work with Nakul. He is a generous choreographer and made a point of creating and teaching me movements that integrated with my fitness routine, rather than just trying to teach me a regular dance routine. Indian dance come from an ancient religious tradition -it is complex and each movement has a meaning. Even the basic hand movements and small combination of steps that I learned took me weeks to master. It was not easy, and Nakul was not easy on me, either. He pushed me to my limits. I loved it... but after three days of dancing with Nakul I had to take three days off to recover. And so I did.
Thank you, Nakul, for the best routine for Ms Fitness World. I know you are a big part of why I received the highest score. And thank you, Shawn, for a fabulous experience and making this all possible!
I AM SO GLAD TO HAVE GOD!
Intense training got the best of me and, once again, I got injured before a major competition .
After Ms Fitness Canada, my calves were injured. I could not even walk after the show. I felt devastated. With less than two weeks before Ms Fitness World, I could not afford a break, but I was forced to have one. So I took a physical break, and made the decision that, if I couldn’t work my body, I would work my mind. I had to be strong mentally and eliminate as much junk as possible out of my mind. It was definitely a challenge. I was not able to walk, but I wanted to win in ten days. Period.
I did a lot of visualization and took time to be with God. I knew that by focusing on HIM, things would work the right way. The beautiful thing is that GOD always keeps His promises.
My friend Shawn gave me the best book at the best time. "Never Give UP" by Joyce Meyer. What a perfect gift. I was on fire, reading every page of that book, and it helped me to through the worry I was experiencing because of my injured calves .I highly recommend it. And if you do choose to read it, please let me know what you think about it.Getting to
The day of the competition I felt great!
I was comfortable with my physique, and the other competition elements of my tan (sprayed), make up, and hair were great. Pre-judging in the morning went well for the beauty, speech, and physique round. In the evening show, we had to perform our routines. All I wanted was my calves not to cramp on me while performing.
Before my routine I got down to my knees and told God, “I will do my part the best that I can,” and then I asked Hum to do His part. To no surprise, He Did His part. I started my routine. As it went on and after my acrobatic line I realized that there was NO pain in my calves at all. I enjoyed performing my routine, so much. I haven’t felt that good - mentally or physically - on stage in the five years since I started to compete.
LIFE IS ALWAYS BETTER WITH GOD!
"TASTE AND SEE THAT THE LORD IS GOOD" PSALM 34:8
At the end of the evening I was the first ever competitor to win Ms Fitness World three years in a row.
I also want to mention that, although I am alone on the stage competing, it took a great team this year to win the title. So I want to thank God, Shawn, Wade, Joan, Scott, and Joanne. We are all winners!
