In this article I want to talk to you about the power of commitment. I will also get you to do a simple exercise to check your level of commitment and you will soon see if you are on a path to fitness success or fitness failure.

To each of us the word commitment might mean something different:
To a marathon runner it might mean going that extra 10 miles even though they are feeling absolutely spent.
To a writer it might mean writing that same page over 50 times until you know you are happy.
To a fighter it might mean getting up from the mat one more time than you’ve been knocked down.
To a parent it might mean playing in the yard with your children even though there is plenty of work to do.
I want to tell you that
your commitment level is absolutely powerful to the outcome of your fitness goals. Your commitment level will determine if you let sickness get you down, it will determine if you exercise on vacation, and it will even determine what you eat late at night in front of the television. I know you have a vision and you have your goal, but exactly how committed are you?
Let’s take a look at three separate observations regarding commitment:
1. Commitment Starts in the HeartCommitment always precedes achievement. I’m sure most of you have watched an important sporting event such as the Olympics or even a championship playoff game. I’m also sure that most of you have heard the announcers say that the underdog with the most heart has come out on top this day. The team or player with the most natural ability does not always win. I have heard that during the Kentucky Derby, the winning horse effectively runs out of oxygen after the first half mile, and he goes the rest of the way on heart. Bottom line, if you want to see through to reach your goals, heart will come into play one time or another.
2. Commitment is Tested by ActionArthur Gordon acknowledged, “Nothing is easier than saying words. Nothing is harder than living them day after day.” I would have to say that the measure of your commitment can be seen in the action you are taking. I’ve watched a few episodes of Survivor on television, and it is interesting to see the level of enthusiasm the first week of the show. However, it doesn’t take long before their words are speaking much louder than their actions.
3. Commitment Opens the Door to AchievementI love this quote by David McNally, “Commitment is the enemy of resistance, for it is the serious promise to press on, to get up, no matter how many times you are knocked down.” I don’t know any champions that were born champions. It takes hard work and commitment to stick it out no matter what comes against you. Never give up and realize that commitment might sometimes be the only thing left to carry you forward.
So where are you right now in regards to your health and fitness goals? What kind of person would you say you are when it comes to commitment? Are you achieving all that you can?
Let’s take a simple test to determine your level of commitment towards your fitness goal.I want you to take out your calendar (or day timer) and calculator for this exercise. Now I want you to go back over the last month of your life and calculate the amount of time and money that you have put towards your fitness goals. After you have done that, now generally add up other things that have taken your time and money. You will quickly see how committed you are to your fitness goals. This exercise might tell you quite a bit about yourself and your habits and goals.
